Abstract:Dystopia is a community or society that is undesirable or frightening. It is the antonym of utopia. The paper sets out to analyze the dystopian theme of Nineteen Eighty-Four. The first chapter of this paper starts from the state system in Oceania, including the structure, the class and the social organization of Oceania. The second chapter elaborates the governance of people in Oceania to interpret the surveillance of people’s life, the control of people’s speech and the dominance over people’s thoughts respectively. The third chapter discusses the destruction of culture and language. The aim is to expose the darkness of totalitarianism. Dystopia is always alert to keep people sober and calm, and keep moving towards the perfect world.
