Fitzgerald was promoted as a lieutenant for his bravery and good performance in the army. He met Zelda Sayre, who was an officer’s daughter, and he fell in love with the wild seventeen-year-old girl. However, Zelda had never wanted to marry him for his poor. Although Zelda agreed to marry him finally, her overwhelming desire for wealth, fun, and leisure led her to delay their wedding until Fitzgerald could prove a success. But he didn't success until the publication of This Side of Paradise in 1920. Only after the publication could he earn enough money and fame to convince Zelda to marry him. For his experiences of love in his early age, many of these events was written in his most famous novel, The Great Gatsby, which was published in 1925. For example, Nick Carraaway who was a thoughtful young man from Minnesota, and educated at Ivy League school was the incarnation of Fitzgerald. Also similar to Fitzgerald was Jay Gatsby, a sensitive young man who idolizes wealth and luxury and who fell in love with a beautiful young woman while he stayed at camp in the south. |
