Abstract: Martin Eden is one of the famous works by Jack London. Similar to the writer himself, Martin Eden, an uncouth and husky sailor, gains the fame and wealth through his incessant efforts. But in the end, he commits suicide and sinks himself into the deep sea. In the light of psychoanalysis, this thesis is an attempt to explore the death of the protagonist and to dig out what is beneath his suicide in the hope of mapping out the relationship between the desire and the death. It’s likely that all the tragedies, suicides included, result from our insatiable desire.

摘要：《马丁·伊登》是美国作家杰克·伦敦的代表作之一。小说主人公马丁·伊登的人生经历和作者杰克·伦敦惊人相似，他本来是个出身卑微、知识贫乏的水手，后来经过不断的努力，通过写作而一举成名，跻身上流社会。但作者最后却选择了投海自杀的道路。本文试图在精神分析理论的观照下分析主人公之死，发现自杀背后的动机—人的无法满足的欲望。只有摆脱欲望的束缚人类才能走出悲剧。
