Abstract:In this thesis there is a simple analysis on the similarities and differences of Chinese Buddhist culture and English Christian culture from the comparing of Chinese and English idioms. Language is a symbol which shows the real existence of cultures, and cultures rely on language to pass on in people’s life. Language and cultures influence each other. The idiom is an important and special part of language which reflects the cultures, customs, beliefs and great wisdom of human with the developing of human. Religious culture is an important part of cultures. Religious culture and a country’s culture influence each other, and religious culture influences people’s life too. Religious cultures have great influence on idioms’ forming, people express their religious beliefs for human life in many aspects through idioms, and idioms reflect the influence of religious cultures on people’s life. Different countries have different cultures and religions, and idioms can directly reflect the religious cultures of the countries. Buddhism is the main religion in China and Christianity is the main religion of English countries, and the two cultures’ idioms can reflect some of the similarities and differences of the two religious cultures.
