Abstract:People usually communicate with others in two ways, namely, verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is an important part of human communication, while it hasn’t got proper attention for a long time. People often pay attention to verbal communication when they have communication with others, because they think verbal communication is the only way for people to express themselves. Thus, most people ignore that nonverbal communication also can deliver messages for them. However, we must recognize that nonverbal communication is an important part in communication and English teaching. In China, the research on the application of nonverbal communication in English class teaching is less than that in western countries. The research results in China also fall behind when comparing with some western countries. The thesis which is divided into five parts mainly talks about the application of nonverbal communication in English class teaching. The first part is the general introduction; the second part introduces some situations about the research of nonverbal communication domestic and overseas and makes comparison between them; the third part provides an overview of nonverbal communication, including its functions, classification and importance; the fourth part, which is the important part of the thesis, mainly discuss the application of nonverbal communication in English class teaching, including body language, paralanguage, object language and environmental language, and the author also talks about the characteristics of the students in junior middle school; the last part gives the conclusion of the paper. The author hopes to attract more scholars and English teachers’ attention to the application of nonverbal communication in English class teaching and hopes more English teachers can get better teaching effects by using nonverbal communication effectively.
