ABSTRACT
Culture is a social phenomenon, which is a product created by people for ages. Throughout the history, class division and gender discrimination have always been an issue with great concern. As a way of cultural transmission, film is a vivid reflection of social life; through interpretation of the film, the foreign culture can be more visually understood by people. Meanwhile, serving as the two major parts of communication, dialogues and costume convey with an abundance of thoughts and feelings, and its function cannot be ignored. This paper intends to take the dialogues and costume as the cutting point, by comparing and combining with the social background, tries to discuss the class division and gender discrimination of Britain at the beginning of 20th century from the perspective of verbal and nonverbal communication based on the movie Titanic, thus providing some reference for the study of English culture.
