Abstract With the increasing economic and cultural globalization, foreign films and TV series have been regarded as a communicative medium and carrier of culture. However, different from the prosperity of films and TV series, the study in subtitle translation is insufficient compared with other traditional forms of translation. The classic TV series Downton Abbey is popular among Chinese audiences for its suitable subtitle translation, which reflects the literary thought laden with contemporary features. This thesis makes an analysis of Downton Abbey under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory. The thesis studies the way to achieve equivalence by syntactic and stylistic means, including using four-character form, positive sentences, active sentences, omission, addition and paraphrase. It is hoped to help Chinese audiences to know more about foreign cultures and to provide certain guidance for subtitle translators.
