Abstract
Mary Shelley wrote many novels, essays and literary criticisms. The most popular was Frankenstein, published in 1818. The novel has been considered as the first science fiction in the world. In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley tells a story of a young ambitious scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who tried to make a human being out of corpses. However, he abandoned it at the first sight, which made it become a monster. Then the monster took revenge by murdering Frankenstein’s relatives and friends. The series of murders led to the mutual destruction of Frankenstein and the monster. The thesis tries to explore the ethic problems caused by the development of science and technology, revealing Mary’s worries and concerns. It aims to set a warning for the speedy development of science and technology in modern society. The thesis is composed of four parts as follows. The first part briefly introduces Mary Shelly and her novel, Frankenstein, as well as the literature review. The second part makes a detailed introduction to the connotation and development of ethics of science and technology, together with its principles. The third part makes a concrete analysis of ethical issues caused by science and technology in the novel, such as alienation of Frankenstein and the monster, blind worship of science and technology, and generation of new life forms due to the development of science and technology. The final part concludes that ethics of science and technology is very necessary in creating the harmonious environment for man and nature.
