INTRODUCTION The story of 48 hours in London took place in London; the whole story was closely linked with London's culture, geography and customs. The main character of the story received a blackmail email asking him to pay the ransom of 25,000,000 within 48 hours, otherwise he will pay in the price of life. In fact, in other parts of the city also staged similar events. The police are highly concerned about all these events. Through the close cooperation of victims and the police, the prisoner was caught and charged in the cost of life. This translation includes seven chapters from the thirty-third chapter to the thirty-ninth chapter. In the seven translated chapters, the police had known something about the criminal, his motivation and other evidences. The translation was in strict accordance with the original time sequence, one chapter in a certain time. The application of long and short dialogues made the story develop successfully. The translation can be divided into two parts: the first part is from the thirty-three chapter to the thirty-six chapter, which mainly showed that the police found the criminal was Arthur Hickstead. His motivation was that he felt humiliated in front of the UK’s biggest ever TV audience in the Rock Relief 88. So he wanted to revenge on the people setting him humiliated. At the same time, he hurt some other people for some other purposes. Although the police had known the motivation, they did not have the evidence, so they could not put him into the prison. The second part was from the thirty-seven chapter to the thirty-nine chapter, the hero of the story and his female bodyguards found the important evidence which was enough to arrest the criminal by chance. Through the photos which were sent to the victims, the police found the camera. Through the camera, they found that Arthur Hickstead had one such type of camera and he used his computer to edit these photos. The suspect, the motivation and the evidence were clear enough and the last thing was to capture Arthur Hicksted. The suspect was a cunning one; it took time to capture him. However, the net of Heaven has large meshes, but it lets nothing through. He could not escape legal punishment at last. The part of essay records the process of my translating this novel, focusing on problems and their solutions. Problems including proper nouns related to London’s culture, geography, and politics and so on, words or phases revealing the author’s own feeling and the translation of long sentences, and how to use Foreignizing Translation and Domesticating Translation correctly. The solutions can be roughly summed up as searching the Wikipedia, seeking the help from teachers and referring to the relevant books. |
