Abstract:Charles Dickens is one of the greatest English critical realism writers in the process of the development of the novel. His numerous works reveal various thorny problems in the life and relations of various strata in capitalist society. Great Expectations is one of the most mature works of Charles Dickens, but it didn't get the due attention all the time. This paper aims to further explore and analyze the characterization of "nobody" in his later work Great Expectations. So we can have a better understanding of this works, and see the power of critical realism more clearly in Dickens's works. Firstly, this paper briefly introduces the author Dickens and the content of this book; Secondly, this paper focuses on the description of nobody and the conflicts within all classes; Thirdly, this paper anylizes the reasons. The image of nobody is not entirely the result of the social class, but also has its own reasons. Finally, the conclusion is drawn that the portrayal of nobody often expresses the sharp problems existing in the living conditions and social relations of all classes and strata in the capitalist society at that time.
