Abstract:Translation is an interlingual and intercultural communication activity. Being a synthetical, intricated and vital linguistic notion, context is not only one of the important know ledge points in language learning, but a very crucial element which cannot be neglected in translation. Context is closely related to translation. So, the contextual analysis is critical for accurate translation. Context can be divided into two parts: linguistic context and non-linguistic context. It can be concluded that non-linguistic context analysis plays a very important role in novel translation after the probe into the definition and classification of context from situational context, cultural context and paralinguistic context. In view of this situation, the thesis aims to make the translator informed of the contextual knowledge and aware of the importance of contextual analysis in translation in order to understand the text correctly and express it effectively. The author clarifies the great significance of non-linguistic context during translating, especially in novel translation. Through the two translated versions of Wuthering Heights (Yang Yi, Yilin Press and Fang Ping, Shanghai Translation Publishing House), and after the exposition of the relationship between context and translation, a lot of examples are employed to exemplify the importance of contextual analysis in novel translation.
