Abstract:The Storm is one of the main works of American writer Kate Chopin. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the American society at this time was undergoing major social changes. Under the social background of such a great change at that time, women did not have the right to enjoy sexual desire. This is naturally unimaginable in the eyes of modern and enlightened people. Accepted, but at the time it was an invisible huge shackle for women. The traditional pattern of gender relations is at stake at this time. The thought-provoking female writer Kate Chopin wants to use the short story of "Storm" to inspire people to think about the relationship between men and women in marriage and family, and it is symbolized by storm in the novel. The image, depicting the sex between men and women in a symbolic language, not only shocked the conservative public at that time, but also created a precedent for British and American literature, and also left a valuable spiritual wealth for future generations. This is the silent but powerful protest of Kate Chopin's cruel reality that the woman could not enjoy the innate sexual rights at the time! (孙胜忠.2002:36)We can further understand the true intentions of the author's works through an in-depth study of the novel's symbolic techniques.
