Abstract:Self--Determination Theory is put forward mainly by Deci Edward L. and Ryan Richard M. A in 1980s.In this study, the Self-Determination theory is subdivided into Intrinsic Motivation, Extrinsic Motivation and A-motivation. Better understanding each part of the theory will do a favor in analyzing what items really plays a great role in learning motivation. A survey analysis carried out which is about junior middle students' English learning motivation in New oriental School is conduced to explore that how does the self-determination theory play a role in training school and which measures should be taken to improve learning motivation.The findings support the application of Self-Determination Theory in the foreign language learning . Specially, learning environment, including teachers, the whole study atmosphere makes a great role in arousing learning motivation.
