Abstract: Henry James is an American writer and his works often focus on the differences between the European and American women. Daisy Miller is a story about Daisy Miller, a young American lady, who travels around Europe and falls love with Winterbourne. Daisy Miller shows the conflicts between Daisy,who represents American women, and European women. Through the analysis of the female characters, Daisy Miller, Mrs.Costello and Mrs.Walker, in the novel, this thesis aims to interpret the differences in values between European and American women in Daisy Miller. The differences in values are mainly manifested in the following two aspects: the concept of love and social norms. The differences in the concept of love are exposed as conservativeness vs. independence and materialism vs. mentality respectively. The difference in the social norms is egalitarianism vs. hierarchies. Key words: Daisy Miller; European and American women value differences; female characters
