Abstract:Costume culture, carried by costume, is a respect of our physical and spiritual life and a mixture of our psychological activities like consciousness, emotion, idea and creative world. With the increasing development of advanced science and technology, multiculturalism is becoming more and more prevalent around the world. At the same time, cultural exchange, cultural conflicts and reconciliation between China and the Western countries have raised a great attention within the passing decades. This essay reviews the characteristics of the Chinese and Western costume culture change by making a comparison of the two different costume systems. Due to the various factors such as geography, politics, economy, region and civilization, China and the West have formed each different costume systems with remarkable features during different historical periods. Costume culture, accompanied with dress, is the reflection of great arts and creative accomplishments belonging to all human beings. By comparing of three aspects of costume culture including perception of wearing, design and style, cloth and tailor to expound the differences and similarities between Chinese and western costume culture. Besides, taking the period of Tang dynasty and Renaissance as an example, the paper provides a better analyse of the two different and similar costume culture systems. From the Silk Road to Chinese Cheongsam, the costume culture exchange and reconciliation between China and the West become more and more standing out in the long history background.
