Abstract:XZUT(Xuzhou University of Technology) is an application-oriented university which has many subjects like engineering, science engineering, literature, economics, management, education, art and physical education. In 2005, with the approval by Ministry of Education, the school transformed from a college into an undergraduate college, and later became an undergraduate university. The university is based on practising the concept of great application, great engineering, great life and great culture, strengthening the integration of production and education, the cooperation between schools and enterprises. During these years, the university has contributed a lot to the local talents cultivation and economic development. The university always holds the education criterion that the university should base on students and try to achieve coordinated development, aiming to cultivate the application-oriented talents who have comprehensive knowledge, practical skills, innovative abilities and high standard qualities. The English professor, Ma Longyun (2010) also points out that the goal for the English Majors is to cultivate the application-oriented talents with high qualities. The English talents from Xuzhou University of Technology should meet the needs of the transformation of the industries in Xuzhou, strengthen their ability in discipline construction and innovation and serve the society. However, the current situation of the English majors in Xuzhou University of Technology is not so satisfactory. The low speed of the cultivation, incompleteness of our teaching strategy, rigid teaching modes and inflexible curriculum all restrict our cultivation pace on English talents in application-oriented universities. This passage is written from the student perspective, basing on the questionnaire and the collected data to find the difficulties and ways out to the talents cultivation in application-oriented universities like Xuzhou University of Technology.
