Abstract:C. S. Lewis, an important British writer and intellect, is regarded as the most important Christian writer of the 20th century. The Chronicles of Narnia shows a fantastic world. By depicting the fantastic world of Narnia, the novel reveals some universal themes. Besides, the wonderful and painful experience of the Pavensie children illustrates the human conditions in the world of reality. This paper will concentrate on the similarities between the world of fantasy and that of reality. With the help of relevant studies on the novel, the paper will analyze the universal themes, i.e. the prevailing justice against evil, a hierarchy of order and open universe; and will also illustrate the human conditions in the world of reality including free will, meaningful sufferings and simple wants. Key Words: C. S. Lewis, Narnia, fantasy, universal themes

With the help of relevant studies, my paper analyzes the universal themes revealed by LWW. Through the world of fantasy, the novel revisits a number of universal themes about the world of reality and the human conditions in it. They are full of meanings and wisdom. Lewis is famous for fantasy stories. The Chronicles of Narnia is the most popular one. In A Field Guide to Narnia Colin Duriez says that “fantasy can generalize while remaining concrete and at its best it can do more: it can give us experiences we have never had and thus, instead of commenting on life, can add to it” (95). In the contemporary world, we often find ourselves too busy to find chance to penetrate the mask of life in reality. Fantasy, serving as a kind of mirror, reveals the truth in reality above the “Shadow-Lands”. By reading LWW, we are reminded of those universal themes about the world and human conditions. These themes can be even more helpful and relevant in the world of reality.
