INTRODUCTION

China Diary---The Life of Mary Austin Endicott, which focuses on Mary and her husband’s living experience in China. Mary Austin Endicott was a writer who came from Canada. In the dairy, Mary recalled it was the destiny that brought them together. Due to the same values and the same view of life, they fell in love at their first glance. Although their love were stormy at times, they got married eventually. Because Jim was raised by his father in China, he had a special emotion toward China. In his childhood dream, China was a nation with a long history. Moreover, in order to follow his father’s footstep, Jim hope Mary could come to China with him. Delightedly, Mary accepted Jim’s requirement. In her mind, living with Jim in China was a challenge to herself. However, she was willing to face the challenge for their love. In 1925, Mary came to Shanghai, China. And then, she overcame the difficulties in Yangtze Rive to get to Chungking. Later on, she and Jim settled down in Chungking. They lived in Chungking nearly 40 years. In the past40 years, Mary had a deep understanding of herself, her husband, and her children .

This practice chooses four chapters to translate. In chapter 9, Mary came back to Chungking. However, it was a disaster for her back to Chungking. Compared with the peaceful life in Canada, China was still in a chaotic state in 1928. At that time, the mainstream thought of China was the feudalistic ideas. Mary was rather dreadful at some of the restrictions of life in China. Moreover, she even wanted to give up learning Chinese. In China, there was a person who cares about her. It was Jim. Upon Mary’s back to Chungking, the living environment and the growth of children had been haunting her for a long time. For the sake of family health, she tried her best to find the comfortable living environment. Finally, she made it.

The tenth chapter mainly talked about the life of Mary’s family in Golden Valley. There were two new members joining in their family, Shirley and Philip. The six members of family lived happily here. However, under the cloak of ordinary life, Mary was still worried by some annoyances that occurred in life. For example, Mary always felt upset for Jim could not take care of children with her at home. Life is like a box of chocolates, always mixed with sorrow and joy. When Mary worked with Jim, she always felt happy.

In chapter eleven, the writer mainly talked about the story of their struggling with death on the Yangtze River. In 1963, Mary and Jim prepared to go back to Canada and planned to have a vacation there. But on the way home, their ship ran into a shipwreck. In the narrow channel, the brown waves were swinging violently as a crazy beast. Faced with the imminent danger, they believed they could defeat it. In the end, they succeeded.

The twelfth chapter mainly told us the life of Mary in Canada. During the recession of world, Mary arrived home. Although some allowance of the United Church missionaries had been cut half, they provided free lessons at Conservatory of Music for them. Mary could catch this opportunity to enrich her inner world. In fact, she indeed got some useful reflections about her life. At Easter 1934, she took part in a movement called Oxford Group. In this group, she had a deep understanding to the God she believed. To an extent, the reflection and understanding of the God in Mary’s mind did improve her life.
