Abstract: This thesis aims to analyze The Call of the Wild from the perspective of naturalism and the naturalistic elements which are used in this novel. The thesis will discuss how Buck makes his choice of returning to the wild and becomes a beast under the dual function of nature at last. This paper will try to discuss the author’s understanding on naturalistic elements: genetic determinism and environmental determinism under the background of the writer’s living time. Meanwhile, this thesis will appreciate the principle of natural selection and survival of the fittest which are advocated by naturalism. Key words: naturalistic elements; genetic determinism; environmental determinism
