Abstract: By investigating the causes and process of Denver’s growth in the novel Beloved, this thesis tries to discover the self-liberation and self-pursuit of the black women. The analysis starts from introducing the growing process of Denver--- from loneliness to self-independence. Then emphasis is put on analyzing the external causes and internal causes to Denver’s growth. Finally, it is proved that in the process of Denver’s growth, the external social environment, encouragement of people around, and her inner change all make great contributions to her growth, enabling her to become an independent woman gradually. Meanwhile, Denver’s growth also brings hope to her family and indicates the bright future of the black people. Key words: Denver; growth; external causes; inner change
