Abstract:Juxtaposed adjectives are very expressive and meaningful in English. More attention should be paid to them. Juxtaposed adjectives in English are arranged not only in a juxtaposed order, but also in a certain grammatical and logical order. This thesis focuses on the usage and some useful principles in translating juxtaposed adjectives into Chinese. Furthermore, some important notions in relation to juxtaposed adjectives such as the Chinese adjective suffix “de (的)”, four-word phrases, attributive adjectives, and modifying adjectives are analyzed. Key words: juxtaposed adjectives; usage; translation principles; translation equivalence
As far as the translation rules of juxtaposed adjectives are concerned, translators should be faithful to the original works. They need to understand English sentences well. The Chinese version can be expressed appropriately by means of changing sentence structure, putting Chinese adjective suffix “de (的)” after the adjective, and selecting appreciative terms or pejorative terms. The translation of English juxtaposed adjectives can be made elegant by choosing proper four-word phrases, turning them into nouns or verbs if it is necessary. |
