Abstract：Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a well-known representative figure of Latin American magical realism. Love in the Time of Cholera is the first work Marquez published after he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. When talking about Marquez, people will think of One Hundred Years of Solitude at once. However Love in the Time of Cholera is also very important in the history of Latin American literature. It has been considered as a work of great genius. The novel has been studied and analyzed by critics from various perspectives. Yet the secrets of its charm are still hidden waiting for readers to explore. It is like a riddle that has different answers to different people. This thesis will analyze the novel from the aspect of symbolism. Symbolism is widely used in literary works, like poetry, plays and novels. Marquez uses a lot of symbols in this novel in order to deepen its theme and better explain the relationship between love and death. 

　　　The thesis is made up of four chapters. Chapter One introduces Marquez, Love in the Time of Cholera and previous studies on the novel. Chapter Two gives a detailed description of symbolism. Chapter Three is the backbone of this thesis, devoted to specific analysis of symbolic features in this novel. It deals with three main symbolic aspects—title, objects and characters. Chapter Four is the conclusion, summarizing the main points of the whole thesis.

摘要：加夫列尔·加西亚·马尔克斯是著名的拉丁美洲魔幻现实主义代表人物，《霍乱时期的爱情》则是马尔克斯获得诺贝尔文学奖之后的第一部作品。虽然提到马尔克斯的时候，我们联想到的就是《百年孤独》，但他的《霍乱时期的爱情》在拉美文学中也有很高的地位。《霍乱时期的爱情》已经被许多学者从多个方面进行了细致的研究，本文将重点从象征主义角度对小说进行更深入的分析。象征主义手法广泛应用于各种文学作品中，如诗歌、戏剧、小说。马尔克斯为了深化小说的主题思想，更好地阐释爱情与死亡的关系，他在《霍乱的爱情中》使用了大量的象征。本文旨在从象征主义角度详细分析马尔克斯的杰出作品《霍乱时期的爱情》，探讨这部作品中的象征手法和作者的写作意图。
