Abstract:Jack London is one of the famous American novelists in late 19th and early 20th. In his life, he experienced ups and downs and created a lot of work. He has published 50 books in the 18-year writing career. His famous short novel Love of Life is one of them. When it was published, the novel enjoyed a great fame all over the world. It told about the crucial life of “gold diggers” in wild North American struggling with nature. The protagonist’s strong desire to survive clearly revealed in the process of battling with the surrounding environment, which caused a great effect on readers.

With the development of science and technology, a lot of environmental problems have emerged, such as solid waste, pollution, expansion of industrialization and so on. Under such circumstance, more and more scholars realized the severity of environmental destruction, and at the same time, they began to profoundly rethink the relationships between human beings and the nature. Eco-criticism is the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment. This paper analyzes London’s ecological thoughts filled in Love of Life from the perspective of Eco-criticism, aiming to convey a thought to readers that a harmonious relationship should be built between human beings and nature.

Key words:  Jack London  Love of Life  Eco-criticism
