Abstract：As an indispensable and natural part of the English language, English euphemisms have existed for a long time. The emergence of English euphemisms has a close relation with language taboos. Since English euphemisms plays an important role in social communication, it is like lube that avoids hurting the other party’s feeling. It oils human relationships in communication and helps to save face of communicators. If people make full use of euphemism, it can accelerate and facilitate human communication. This paper elaborates on the definition of euphemism，and applied fields of English euphemism. Only when we can understand the proper euphemism in different backgrounds and environment, can we use the proper euphemism to minimize hurt to people and to achieve the purpose of effective communicative function. Euphemisms are widely used in every field. It is good for us to develop an awareness of studying how to use euphemisms properly in order to achieve more effective communication in our daily life.

摘要：委婉语是人类语言中的一种普遍现象，其存在的历史十分悠久，委婉语的出现与语言禁忌是息息相关的，英语委婉语在交际中起着重要的作用，通过委婉语，可以避免语言过于直露而给对方造成伤害。它是语言使用中人们用来协调人际关系的有效润滑剂，是保全交际各方面的重要手段。本文主要研讨了委婉语的定义，委婉语的应用领域，只有认识委婉语在不同背景、不同环境下的使用方式，才能够调整好礼貌程度，从而把对方的伤害降到最低限度，以达到成功交际的目的。委婉语在各个领域都有广泛的应用，它有助于培养我们正确使用委婉语的意识,以便帮助我们达到更有效的交际.
