ABSTRACT：Charles Dickens is one of the most representative writers in critical realistic literature. His fame in critical realistic literature is widely known to the world. Great Expectations created between 1860 and 1861 is one of his representive works. Standing as one of the most revered works in all of English literature, Great Expectations vividly presents the growth and development of the protagonist named Pip, who grows up from a boy of shallow aspirations to a man of depth and character. Guilt and desire, money and the nature of capitalism are pervasive themes in the novel. Due to the corruption of cash, Pip, a plain and kind young man, turns into a snobbish hypocrite. Eventually Pip finds his pure soul after suffering from the hardship in the cruel reality. The author of this paper finds that some descriptions of nature, place, character, virtue and sins in the novel are connected with the images in the Bible. Plenty of scholars and critics have analyzed the theme of the novel and characters’ personality from the perspective of realism, some of them have also studied the writing techniques of the novel, such as the characteristics of narration and structure. But few studies have touched on the Biblical archetypes in the novel. Therefore, through applying Fry’s archetype theory to analyze the natural imagery, places, and main characters which are closely connected to Biblical archetypes, this paper aims to reveal the profound theme of this novel and provide a new perspective for readers to understand Great Expectations.

中文摘要：查尔斯 ·狄更斯是英国批判现实主义文学流派中最具代表的作家之一。他在批判现实主义文学上的造诣不仅在英国家喻户晓，在世界文学史上亦影响深远。《远大前程》创作于1860到1861年之间，是他最具代表的作品之一。作为一部在英国文学史上颇具盛名的作品，《远大前程》呈现了主人公皮普如何从一个不解人情世故的小男孩成长成一个稳重，深沉的男人的过程。罪恶与欲望，金钱与资本主义的现实在小说中淋漓再现。由于金钱的腐蚀，皮普由一个善良的男孩慢慢变成了一个势力的伪君子,最后在残酷现实中受尽折磨的皮普终于再次找回了那个纯洁的灵魂。本文作者发现小说中对于自然、场景、人物以及善与恶的描写与《圣经》中的意象有诸多契合之处。大量学者、批评家从现实主义文学的角度分析了小说的主题及小说人物性格,也从小说的叙事特征及结构方面分析了小说的写作技巧，而对于小说中的圣经原型意象研究则较少。因此，本文作者运用弗莱的圣经原型理论分析《远大前程》中自然环境、场景、人物等与圣经原型密切相关的意象，意在揭示出小说所蕴含的寓意深刻的主题，从而为这部名著提供一个新的解读视角。
