Abstract: Xu Yuanchong’s theory of Three Beauties, namely beauty in sense, beauty in sound and beauty in form, is prevailingly regarded as the highest standard for poetry translation. Practically, sometimes the beauty in sound or form of source poem is fully represented but the sense of the poem is lost, while sometimes the beauty in sound or form is sacrificed for the preservation of the sense. Taking Robert Burns’ A Red, Red Rose, based on Xu’s Three Beauties theory, this paper attempts to analyze, appreciate and evaluate two Chinese versions of it. It concludes that an effective way in poetry translation is to realize the harmonious integration of sense, sound and form. Keywords: the theory of Three Beauties, A Red, Red Rose, translated versions, harmony
