Abstract:This paper uses Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory as its theoretical basis, and expounds on the contents of the theory. Starting from the definition of the translatability and untranslatability, and based on the lexical features of cyber catchword, this paper emphasizes on the study of the two sides of cyber catchword. After the brief introduction of the things concerning with cyber catchword, including concept, classification, formation, characteristics and the tendency of development, the author analyzes which parts of cyber catchword are translatable and which parts are untranslatable by integrating various kinds of practical ways of translation with different examples. Besides, through the analysis and summing up of the translatability and untranslatability of cyber catchword, this paper also makes an elementary study of the hidden differences and similarities of cultures, societies and language receptors between china and western countries. On the foundation of the previous study, people are provided with some effective methods of C-E and E-C translation of cyber catchword, aiming to help to solve the problems that we have come across during the process of translation of cyber catchword. By doing that, we will succeed in the visualized and vivid shifts of cyber catchword when we face with different cultural environment and we will make the shifts more smooth and authentic as well.
