Abstract:The development of science and technology is keeping information exchange and communication easier and more diversified, and the invention of phones fundamentally has changed and enriched people’s way of communication. As one of various functions of mobile phone, short message service is fast, convenient and low- cost so that it is widely used and adopted by individual, community and society. In recent years, the network language has become gradually popular, and Internet users actively participate in online communication. And its influence has greatly changed our life, especially on the language in short message. Thus, the study of Netspeak in SMS appears very important and significant. In nearly ten years, some linguists have done some research on Netspeak, such as its morphology and syntax. However, so far, there has been no integrated system of Netspeak study in pragmatic perspective. Such cross-disciplinary study of Netspeak and pragmatics is not common. On the basis of some relevant pragmatic theories and Netspeak, this article, in the pragmatic perspective, will focus on the analysis of the use of Netspeak in SMS. In order to collect adequate and important data to analyze people’s communication habits and features, the author has worked out a questionnaire and carried out some interviews with the targeted survey objects. After carrying on full analysis of the data, the author finally draws conclusions mainly as follows: 1) in the Netspeak in SMS, the maxims of politeness principle and cooperation principle can be violated to some degree. 2) as a kind of language variation, the use of the Netspeak in SMS has unique and stylistic features, such as creative, humorous and practical, etc. 3) there are some differences between Netspeak in SMS and Netspeak in CMC. 4) currently, the use of Netspeak in SMS still has many problems, such as its non-standard and vulgarization.
