Abstract:Translation is a communicative activity across languages and cultures, which involves not only the transformation of linguistic signs, but also the cultural exchanges and adaptations. As one of the intercultural communications, the C-E translation of Chinese cuisine names is to transmit Chinese cuisine culture to the world along with the clear rendering of the basic meaning of Chinese cuisine name. With the fast development of global economy, it increasingly gets the attention from scholars at home and abroad in recent years. From the perspective of cross-culture, this thesis makes a study on the translation principles, and the feasible translation strategies and methods which are instructive for the C-E translation of Chinese cuisine names. The emphasis of study in the thesis is laid on the employment of domestication strategy and foreignization strategy in C-E translation of Chinese cuisine names, and the conclusion is that to translate Chinese cuisine names by the combination of foreignization strategy and domestication strategy is helpful to improve the quality of C-E translation of Chinese cuisine names and promote intercultural communication between China and the world.
