ABSTRACT:This thesis aims to reveal such a relationship. In the novel The Last of the Mohicans, Cooper vividly depicts the complex relationship of cooperation and conflicts between the whites and Indians in the early stage of the American westward movement. The relationship is reflected not only in the white-Indian military cooperation and mutual assistance in daily life but also in cultural and armed conflicts between the whites and Indians. The discussion of such a complex racial relationship can help people know better the overall perspective of the frontier society of the American west.
Key words: relationship; cooperation; conflicts; whites; Indians
