ABSTRACT
Translation has a long history both in the western and eastern countries. From the ancient times of mankind, till the discovery and dissemination of ancient books in modern times, translation has been playing an extremely important role in the trends of changing and communicating constantly of economy, politics, technology, science, literature, philosophy, the maintenance of the world peaceful development and lasting stability. According to the basic principles of linguistics, rhetoric and translation studies,this thesis has already sorted out the origin, development, function and significance of English-Chinese translation, analysized and researched the six key problems in translation from English into Chinese, namely:division, the choice of synonyms, repetition, omission, the expression of negation, and idiomatic expressions. As it is shown in the research, in the process of English-Chinese translation, the methods of literal translation, free translation, linear translation, reverse translation, conversion of parts of speech, and word order adjustment must be made use of.. Then the quality of translations can be improved. Key Words: language; translation; problem; method
