ABSTRACT
Cultivating talents for ethnic groups, ethnic colleges and universities are important institutions of higher education. Under the environment of rapid economic development, the level of opening up has been continuously improving, and cultural exchanges at home and abroad have been closer. There have been wide range co-operations between the Chinese higher education institutions and their foreign counterparts. Hence the Chinese ethnic colleges and universities require English versions for the effective communication, the ethnic colleges and universities have been standing under the spotlight for promoting ethnic cultures like customs, traditions and languages. Based on the theory of functional translation, this paper analyzes the English translation of national colleges and universities from the perspectives of structure name, vocabulary selection, domestication and foreignization, especially on the translation of the word "民族". And finally propose suggestions for the further studies.
