Abstract
There are many metaphors in the whole novel, and the thesis divides metaphor translations into three aspects: literal translation, metonymy translation, and free translation. This thesis uses several examples to analyze translations of metaphor of Pride and Prejudice translated by Sun Zhili. The thesis will first review Nida’s functional equivalence and the some keys to analyze Sun’s version according to Nida’s functional equivalence. And then the thesis will introduce the main ideas of rhetorical devices and metaphor and analyze Sun’s version of metaphor translations based on Nida’s functional equivalence. And this thesis will figure out what Jane Austen really wanted to express her original ideas. After all these efforts done, the paper will summarize whether Sun’s version conforms to Nida’s functional equivalence on the level of meaning, style and culture. Therefore, it has a great significance in solving the problems in translation practices.
