Abstract
Chinese poems and Western ballads are typical literature of their own cultures. In order to figure out their features, this paper will focus on their contrast of supple and rigid features resulting from comparison. And it aims to explore the influence of the old literature like Chinese poems and Western ballads in modern popular literature as well as the significances to the development of their languages in the end of the paper. The outline of the paper is as follows: the first part is the background and previous researches on Chinese poems and western ballads. The analysis of the features of Chinese and English language is in the second part. And the next part is to introduce the history and the characters in each period of poems and ballads and their representations of the East and the West. The focus of this paper is the contrast of Chinese poems and Western ballads from their backgrounds, structures and rhetorical devices. At last, it discusses the influence in modern literature and the significance to language development and some inadequacies of this paper.
