Abstract
Primary school English teaching, as the basic stage of English teaching, lays a solid foundation for English Teaching. However, for a long time, some drawbacks have existed in primary school English teaching in China. In class, some teachers still adopt traditional teaching method that only values the explanation of key points and difficult points but neglects the creation of language situations. Hence, some pupils perform badly in exams and take little interest in learning English. Situational teaching method attaches importance to students’ perception, understanding, practice and mastery of language to ultimately cultivate students’ communicative competence and capacity to apply what they have learned into the real life. This teaching method not only conforms to the needs of pupils’ physical and mental development, but also is consistent with the new curriculum concept. Therefore, the author took the opportunity of the four-week internship to try to generalize situational teaching in the teaching practice. The author conducted situational teaching in the experimental class, while adopted traditional teaching method in the control class. Besides, the author examined their grades and made a survey of their interest in learning English. A series of data indicate situational teaching can arouse students’ learning enthusiasm, improve students’ academic achievements and develop students’ language communicative ability. Situational teaching is suitable to be applied in primary-school English classroom. However, some problems hinder the extension of situational teaching. Therefore, at last, the author gave some pieces of advice.
