Abstract
As a kind of practical language, English is a tool for communication in our daily life. The key point of teaching English naturally focuses on improving learners’ language competence. Some English majors at college cannot explain their ideas fluently in English while they can do quite well in grammar sentences, multiple choices and so on, which is contrary to the teaching objectives. This essay will be developed in the following parts The first part briefly explains the causes behind the phenomenon that college students are poor in using English. The second part focuses on how to improve students’ language competence in class. This part also talks about how to improve students’ overall English ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing area. The third part gives some suggestions about how to improve students’ English ability outside the campus. In the end of the thesis, it state that the improvement of learners’ language competence not only requires the update and change of the teaching methods but also needs the students to raise their awareness of getting out from the “inscribes sea”. They should put their key attention on practicing their English in real conversations to improve their English using competence.
