Abstract
According to the ideas promoted by the New English Curriculum, the education nowadays has put emphasis on giving full play to students’ initiatives. Based on the existing research theories promoted by scholars both at home and abroad, the paper studies the applications of games in classes . First of all, the paper defines the meaning of games, elaborates the history of using games in teaching both at home and abroad and present situations and the functions of games. Furthermore, the applications of using games to teach letters, vocabulary, sentences and dialogues in English classes are presented. Some real-life instances are taken to consolidate the paper statements. Some problems that may appear in the process of using games in teaching shouldn’t be neglected . Therefore, the strategies of using games in English classes are presented. Only when teachers adopt games in teaching effectively and creatively, will the essence of games be correctly interpreted and the English teaching will become more vivid and easy for students to understand and accept.
