ABSTRACT
The phenomenon of “high scores but low abilities” in high school students’ English has caused extensive attention of the society. Investigations found that although the new curriculum standard has been implemented for some years, the unreasonable teaching evaluation system and college entrance examination system still exist. Teaching only focuses on students’ ability of taking exams. Outdated teaching methods can not improve the students' English quality and practical abilities. To develop talents with both knowledge and ability, we must change the examination-oriented education mode and implement the new curriculum standard. English teaching materials should be authentic and practical. In addition to arranging written exercises, teachers should adopt modern teaching methods, create real English environment, let the students master language knowledge in activities, and train their habit of thinking in and using English.
