Abstract: This paper, based on the research on today’ implementation of the National English Curriculum and researches from home and abroad, is aimed to study the status of English grammar Instruction in junior high Schools. In the first place, the paper explains the definitions of certain terms which are related to grammar teaching in junior high schools. Then it further discusses the status of English grammar teaching, including the importance and necessity of grammar teaching in junior high schools. In addition, it discusses the application of the communicative approach in English grammar teaching and its limitations. Finally, according to the existing problems, the author of the paper makes some suggestions for grammar instruction. It is concluded that grammar teaching in junior high schools should not be ignored, and meanwhile teachers should not attach too much importance to it either. They need reach a balance between grammar instruction and other forms of English teaching in junior high schools. Key words: English grammar; junior high school; English curriculum standards; status
