Abstract: English after-school reading, as a very necessary part in English teaching activities and essential for students to collect information, perceive the world, train thinking ability as well as obtain aesthetic experience, is an important way to improve the students' reading ability. This study mainly investigates the current situation of English after-class reading in the junior high school by conducting a questionnaire survey so as to reveal its typical existing problems, such as low interest in English reading after class, unclear purpose of English reading, insufficient after-class reading, narrowness of reading content, and no good after-class reading habit. Furthermore, based on some previous researches and the actual situation, this study summarizes four strategies and methods of improving English after-class reading in junior high school, such as to stimulate students’ strong passion, to help master English reading skills, to promote cooperative learning, and to strengthen tracking guidance for students’ English reading, thus to improve their English reading ability and help them develop a good reading habit in the long term.
