Abstract: Modality System plays a very important role in business communication. Modality has aroused wide attention of the researchers home and abroad. This thesis first reviews the history of modality research and some related papers, then explores the classification of modal expressions. Then, to guarantee accuracy and objectivity, this paper explores the application of modality by making a thorough analysis of some business negotiation dialogues and instances collected. After that, this paper discusses the interpersonal meanings in business negotiation from three steps: politeness meaning, the expression of subjectivity and objectivity, self protection function. Finally, this author makes a conclusion of the present study and points out the limitations of it. At the same time, this paper also points out the significance of study on the modality in business negotiation. Key words: modality; business negotiation; interpersonal meanings
