Abstract: Pearl S. Buck was an American writer and novelist who was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize and also won the Nobel Prize for her idealism and humanitarian concept in The Good Earth. East Wind:West Wind was Pearl Buck's debut novel, which focused on a Chinesewoman, Kwei-lan and the changes that she and her family undergo. This thesis will indicate the clashes between western culture and Chinese culture from two aspects: the confusion that Kwei-lan has felt when she encounters the western culture and the challenge that Kwei-lan’s brother and Mary, an American girl meet with when they face the traditional Chinese culture. By analyzing the changes in Kwei-lan`s life and the birth of Mary’s baby, this thesis will also indicate the fusion between western culture and Chinese culture. East Wind:West Wind not only reveals the culture differences between Chinese and west, but also highlights the fusion of two different cultures. Besides it embodies the Pearl S. Buck`s concept ,"All under heaven are of one family". Key words: Pearl S. Buck; East Wind West Wind; Chinese and Western cultures; clashes; fusion
