Abstract
English news is a major way for people to acquire information in their daily life. For Chinese readers, it is also the main way to know the international situation. However, since there are great differences of language expression between Chinese and English, it is hard for Chinese readers to get effective information from English news. Therefore, English-Chinese news translation plays an important role in the communication between China and the west. This thesis selects political English news as research subject, The Economist as the specific research object. Under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, it discusses how to realize functional equivalence between the source English news and Chinese translation at the semantic level and syntactic level. The research shows that translation strategies, for instance, literal translation, free translation and splitting translation can help the translation of political news to convey information of source language effectively so as to realize the dual equivalence of content and form.
