Abstract:This paper explores the linguistic features of English news in an attempt to provide English learners with accurate ways to read English news and to identify some of the basic requirements in writing news.

　　　 The basic knowledge of news is presented.  It is essential that some general understanding be established as to what is meant by news.  The ways in which the definitions of the news have been expressed vary with different angles.  So there is no single all-encompassing definition of news.  As for news style, to be effective, a journalist must develop a style that has four principal attributes: suitability, simplicity, precision and poise.  Much attention is focused upon the language characteristics of headlines and leads in news English and its lexical features, grammatical features. 

　　　We live in an age of information, a time when new things have taken place around us with a more rapid speed than ever before.  Newspaper has become a treasury of new words.  English news is characterized by its unique use of vocabulary and grammar.  No wonder there is a popular viewpoint that reading English news is an effective way to acquire modern English.

　　　 The research of this paper is focused mainly on the language features of news English; however, language is changing with the development of society, and so is the language of news English.  We cannot cover every respect of it in this paper. As news English is of various types such as academic articles, stories for entertainment, advertisements, weather forecasts, editorials and so on, all of them cannot be discussed in a paper.  Therefore, much work should be carried out to study the features of each concrete classification.  What is more, it is also worth further studying the translation of news English and its relation to the culture.
