摘要：《德伯家的苔丝》被誉为是托马斯·哈代悲剧小说中的经典之作。本文集中分析了作品中安吉尔·克莱尔的人物性格形象，通过揭示他复杂的内心世界和双重人格特征来指出他的悲剧命运成因。克莱尔是进步中的中产阶级，他的思想具有先进性，是资产阶级道德和宗教的反叛者，但他同时又受到了时代的局限，没有能够彻底跳出旧的资产阶级道德观念的桎梏以及他所鄙视的宗教观念的束缚，阶级的属性和个人自身的性格特点，使克莱尔成为了反叛性与妥协性的矛盾统一体。他在将苔丝推向死亡的同时也毁灭了自己。他的悲剧是个人和社会两方面共同造成的，他也是社会的牺牲品。
