Abstract:The improvement of economy and culture prompt the development of tourism industry. Lijiang serving as a scenic tour city in northwest of Yunnan province attracts considerable tourists from home and abroad. For tourists, appreciating the scenery and eating palatable food are of the equal importance. Wandering in the streets in Lijiang, you are going to discover few restaurants with English menus. After reading, foreign guests are puzzled . Skopos Theory has brought in new ideas and provided translation practice with new theoretical basis. The Skopos Theory has offered theoretical basis for research on dishes name translation. Skopos rule is the primary rule of Skopos Theory; summarized as the basic principle of translators, the communicative purpose of translation and the specific aims by using kinds of translation means and communicative targets. In short, the skopos determines the means. In the course of translation, for the skopos rule, we need to know three things as follows. Firstly, translators need to command the origin of the dishes. Secondly, translators need to know the culture differences between source language and target language. Lastly, the users’ requirements, interests and receptivity should be considered. The author takes Skopos Theory as the theoretical guidance and combines learning experience in Lijiang to analyze the translation strategy of Lijiang food names based on the characteristics of Lijiang food. Meanwhile,the author hoped that this paper can contribute efforts to the translation of Lijiang food names, and offer inspiration and reference for the translation of Lijiang food names.
