Abstract: College students in English learning process often pay too much attention to the breadth of vocabulary, and only know the meaning of the word in isolation, instead of the inner relations of different senses and the concrete usage. The author other words, most college students are quite different in the accumulation of vocabulary depth. To solve the problem, college students can make good use of a learners’ dictionary and read examples in word entries. This paper argues that dictionary examples play an active role in helping college students build a deep vocabulary through relevant exposition and illustration, and carries out a test of college English learners’ language proficiency; the analysis of the results can support the dictionary examples’ positive role in the deep accumulation of college English vocabulary.
