Abstract: This study explores how to cultivate pupils’ interest in learning English. The paper first analyses the reasons why pupils lose interest in learning English. On the one hand, teachers hold the attitude of examination-oriented education. On the other hand, pupils hold an attitude of coping with English. These two main factors lead to the decreasing interest in learning English for pupils from childhood, which makes the students fall behind others and even get into a vicious circle. The author suggests 4 methods on how to cultivate pupils’ interest in learning English through comparative analysis: Providing a suitable environment, arousing pupils’ interest through games, creating a harmonious relationship between the teachers and students and establishing an effective evaluation system. These methods will help to increase pupils’ interest in learning English and make a progress in their English studies. Key words: pupils; English study; cultivation of interests
