Abstract: Different nations have their distinctive cultural meanings in numbers. For example, in Chinese-English idioms, the figure “three” reveals the different cultural meaning. This paper, by taking figure “three” as an example, aims to explore the origins of their similarities and differences in conventional cultural meanings between the oriental and western cultures, hoping that language learners can have a better understanding of Chinese-English culture differences.
