Abstract: As a special linguistic form, euphemism can be seen as a kind of “lubricating oil” during communication. It is a perfect approach for people to achieve a successful social communication. This thesis intends to collect euphemism data under different scenarios in The Big Bang Theory from the angle of pragmatic function. Euphemisms in this sitcom are analyzed from lexical, grammatical and rhetorical categories. The study aims to help readers learn some interpersonal skills and improve our ability to communicate in daily life. From the research, it is found that euphemism is the product of politeness, and people use it to avoid unnecessary awkwardness and obstacles. Therefore, the proper application of euphemisms can promote our communication skills and achieve a successful cross-cultural communication.
